Brief Introduction of the School

The School of Earth Sciences and Engineering (SESE) was established in October 2009. It is consists of the Department of Earth Sciences and Engineering and the Department of Surveying, from the School of Civil Engineering; the Department of Geographic Information Science from the School of Hydrology and Water Resources; and the Institute of Isotope Hydrology from the School of Scientific Research. It now has three departments (Geological Sciences and Engineering, Surveying and Geographic Information Science), and seven institutes (Geological Engineering and Disaster Prevention, Hydrogeology and Environment, Isotope Hydrology, Survey Engineering, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information, Geographic Information Science, Earth Probe and Underground Water Engineering). It is facilitate with one experiment center with laboratories in geological engineering, surveying and geographical information science and remote sensing for undergraduate teaching, and laboratories in geological resources and engineering, survey science and technology, geography and geology for scientific research. It owns a Jiangsu Research Center for Large Scale Foundation Stability and Safety. It has HuShan (Nanjing), TianHuangPing (Zhejiang) and JuRong (Jiangsu) experimental sites for teaching and research, Jiangsu demonstration center for surveying, and Water Resource“3S”application laboratory (jointly founded with Hong Kong Polytechnic University).

Under the administration of the Ministry of Education in China, SESE now has one key discipline (geological resources and engineering) at the provincial level, and two key disciplines (survey science and geography) at the university level. It operates two programs for post-doctoral research (geological resources and engineering, and survey science). It has one first-class PH.D training program (geological resources and engineering), five second-class PH.D training programs (geological engineering, earth probe and information technology, surveying, underground water science and engineering, earth science information technology). On the master degree level, it offers four first-class programs (geological resources and engineering, surveying, geography and geology). Furthermore, two second-class programs are offered (geological engineering and survey engineering). On the bachelor level, it offers three programs (geological engineering, surveying engineering and geographic information systems). All these programs are unique in the Jiangsu province, among which geological engineering and surveying have development priorities in the Jiangsu province.

SESE now has 134 staffs, among which, 31 professors, 50 associate professors. There are 26 people qualified to supervise PH.D student and 58 qualified to supervise master student. Two teachers are from foreign countries. The ratio between the number of full time teacher and doctorate is 86.2%. Among all the teachers, many are awarded for their excellences in teaching and research on the national or provincial level. Also, many teachers hold positions in various professional associations both nationally and internationally.

SESE has 1525 full time students, among them, 961 for bachelor’s degree,463 for mater’s degree, 72 for PH.D degree. 29 students are from abroad. SESE has educated many first class talents in the field of water resources and hydropower, civil engineering and transportation. In China, It holds the highest prestige in those fields.

SESE leads and participate in many national engineering endeavors. These include three-gorges-dam, dams on yellow river, many bridges across the Yangtze and other rivers, Nanjing-Shanghai high way, and subway systems in Nanjing.
